Try voice control for a simple task

Voice commands can help navigate a device. They are different from dictating a short message, and availability varies by language and software.

  1. iPhone: Settings → Accessibility → Voice Control → Set Up Voice Control. Follow the tutorial.
  2. Android: review Google’s Voice Access setup guide; the app may need to be installed.
  3. Windows: follow the Voice access guide. Initial setup needs an internet connection.

Practise where mistakes are low-stakes

Start with opening an app or scrolling a practice page. Learn the pause and stop commands before using voice control around purchases, messages or banking.

  1. Avoid saying passwords or private account details aloud around others.
  2. Check what a command actually did before continuing.
  3. Google warns that anyone may control an awake, unlocked device by voice when Voice Access is listening. Review microphone and privacy settings.

Consider other ways to interact

Touch adjustments, switch access, external keyboards and pointing devices may help with different tasks. Built-in software options and separately purchased hardware are not the same thing. Use official guides and ask for tailored support before buying an accessory.

Try one small step

A little practice, no pressure.

Choose a non-sensitive task, such as scrolling a news page. Find the official tutorial and the stop command, then try one command if you feel ready.
